Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata is the statutory Board responsible for the Kolkata major port under India's Major Port Authorities Act 2021. Its official history describes India's only riverine major port, with a roughly 232 km navigational channel from the Sandheads and two dock systems: Kolkata Dock System and Haldia Dock Complex. The current organization structure includes Marine and Hydraulic Study departments, with published functions spanning maintenance dredging, river-regulatory works, bathymetric surveys and navigation-support systems. SMPK issued the May 2026 non-binding expression of interest for phased capital dredging between Sagar and the Eastern Channel.
