Role in marine infrastructure

Chennai Port Authority is the statutory Board responsible for Chennai major port under India's Major Port Authorities Act 2021. Ministry and PIB records identify the east-coast gateway's Bharathi, Dr Ambedkar and Jawahar dock system, navigation and marine-traffic responsibilities and 57.90 million tonnes of cargo handled in fiscal 2025-26. In January 2026 the Authority commissioned an indigenous vessel traffic monitoring system and new channel buoys. It is also the public client for Berth 19A at North Quay in Dr Ambedkar Dock, where IIT Madras is carrying out technical audit and detailed engineering through 31 December 2027. That INR 5.074 million consultancy is not a berth-construction contract: no construction tender, award, contractor, price, notice to proceed, mobilisation or acceptance is verified.
