Role in marine infrastructure

Galway County Council is the local authority for County Galway outside Galway City. Its Marine Section sits within the Roads and Transportation Directorate and manages or maintains 88 of the county's 244 piers, harbours and landing places along 689 kilometres of coastline. The programme covers new and extended piers, slipways, turning bays, breakwaters, sheltered harbours, dredging, coastal protection and annual maintenance, together with 60 public yacht moorings at eight coastal locations. At Inis Oirr, the Council is the contracting authority and infrastructure owner for the 90-metre pier extension, outer and inner breakwaters, rock dredging and associated harbour works. Ward & Burke holds the EUR 26.861255 million design-build contract, while PUNCH Consulting Engineers has separate design, Employer's Representative and resident-engineering roles.
