Projects
Hassyan IWP moves from construction watch to phased marine commissioning
Hassyan's first 60 MIGD desalination block is operating, while the remaining 120 MIGD moves through the 2026 delivery window. The project's marine scope is no longer an inference: owner, developer, and ESIA records identify seawater intake, outfall pipelines, diffuser placement, and future-expansion capacity inside the EPC programme.
What changed
Dubai Media Office and DEWA reported in January 2026 that the 180 MIGD Hassyan SWRO project was about 90% complete and scheduled for full completion in Q1 2027. DEWA's May 2026 results then confirmed that the first 60 MIGD block had been commissioned, with another 120 MIGD expected during 2026. ACWA Power identifies a 30-year BOO project, Hassyan Water Company A, and the SIDEM-SEPCO III EPC consortium. The project ESIA confirms seawater intake and outfall pipelines, provision for the planned future 60 MIGD expansion, and outfall diffuser positioning near the adjacent power-plant diffusers following marine dispersion and environmental review.
Why it matters
Hassyan now provides a live Gulf reference for commissioning very large SWRO marine systems, including the interaction between brine diffusers and an adjacent power-plant outfall. Performance through the phased ramp-up will be more informative than the construction milestone itself. Capacity, environmental acceptance and the expansion-ready intake-outfall infrastructure now have to work as designed.
Decision read
What remains open
This is a commissioning and lifecycle-performance signal, not an unawarded marine package. The immediate questions are whether the remaining blocks enter service on schedule, whether intake and diffuser systems meet acceptance and marine water-quality conditions, and how the pre-provisioned marine infrastructure supports the additional 60 MIGD phase. That distinction matters for EPC delivery teams, environmental specialists, operators, and suppliers evaluating Gulf SWRO reference projects.
Next watchpoints
