Nigg turns cable manufacturing into a heavy-quay delivery test

Port of Nigg's awarded Eastern Inner Dock Quay links a £30 million-plus heavy-quay investment to the adjacent Sumitomo Electric HVDC cable factory. The value is not simply more waterfront: the port is creating a direct production-to-vessel route for large cable systems while adding Ro-Ro and deep-water operating capacity.

What changed

Maraen Port of Nigg confirms the McLaughlin & Harvey award, £30 million-plus total investment, approximately 16,000 m² heavy-duty quay, additional Ro-Ro capability, dedicated cable load-out and export function, and commencement of site preparations. Maraen's final-investment announcement and marine-licence notice establish the approval and revetment-conversion sequence. HIE identifies up to £10 million of grant support and the adjacent £350 million Sumitomo cable factory, with Nigg intended as its primary export facility. The current evidence establishes an awarded and consented interface, not a completed quay, operating cable factory, accepted load-out system, or first export voyage.

Why it matters

Subsea-cable manufacturing capacity does not become offshore installation output until finished cable can move safely from the factory, across a load-rated port interface, and onto a compatible installation vessel. Nigg makes that chain visible through an awarded quay package with a defined export use, public grant support, marine consent, and a named contractor.

The quay and cable factory form one production-logistics chain. Civil completion alone will not clear pavement loads, Ro-Ro access, fendering, mooring or cable-handling procedures; factory output without an accepted load-out berth creates storage and schedule exposure. The decisive milestones are physical quay progress, interface testing, berth acceptance and the first documented cable load-out.
