Hamad Port equipment arrived in 2022; terminal handover remains open
Qatar's QAR 1.6 billion food-security terminal received its two mobile harbour cranes by vessel in August 2022, but that call occurred while the owner still reported more than 93% progress. A December 2024 visit still described final technology and operating-system work, and Ashghal reported 98% in June 2026 with remaining stages and readiness planning open.
What changed
The July 2017 Ministry of Transport contract release establishes the QAR 1.6 billion AlJaber Engineering design-and-build award, 53-hectare site and dedicated wharf. The December 2020 owner update reported 85% progress and a Q2 2021 operating target. The August 2022 first-vessel release states that the ship carried two Liebherr LHM 280 mobile harbour cranes, records more than 93% progress and calls operation a later step. A December 2024 ministerial visit described final operations to equip storage, packaging, transport and handling systems. Ashghal's 25 June 2026 update reported 98% but still referred to remaining implementation stages and operational-readiness plans. The published timeline stops at 98% implementation. Final whole-system handover and sustained food-cargo service have not been documented.
Why it matters
An equipment-carrying vessel could use the berth in 2022 while the terminal behind the quay was still incomplete. Physical berth access, an equipment shipment, civil completion, integrated process commissioning and commercial cargo service are different milestones. The first call confirmed one interface, not whole-system handover.

What remains open
The August 2022 vessel call confirmed that the berth could receive heavy equipment; it did not show that grain, sugar or edible-oil cargo could move through the terminal. That requires the unloading equipment, conveyors, silos, tanks, processing lines, utilities, controls and emergency systems to work together under the operator. Ashghal's 98% figure in June 2026 is meaningful construction progress. Formal handover and repeated commodity service would establish the operating result.
