USACE awarded Great Lakes Dredge & Dock a USD 19.5 million Ocean City beachfill contract for more than 1.6 million cubic yards, records construction starting on 7 July 2026, and records dredge Illinois mobilised at the 10 July field-status boundary. Those milestones define commitment and readiness. Current-cycle production, placed quantity, surveyed berm geometry, completion and acceptance remain distinct evidence gates.

What changed

The USACE award release sets the USD 19.5 million contract, names Great Lakes Dredge & Dock and describes the more-than-1.6-million-cubic-yard scope, offshore borrow source, placement reach and cost share. The 2026 project page dates the start to 7 July and records Illinois mobilisation, an early-September forecast and a 100-foot berm at +8.0 feet NGVD. Its page label says updated 14 July while the construction narrative remains dated 10 July. The USACE fact sheet dates the partnership agreement to 18 September 1991 and records 1992 initial construction, approximately 6.2 million cubic yards of initial fill and approximately 1.1 million cubic yards every three years. The City page separately records the 2022-23 cycle complete with 1.5 million cubic yards of beachfill and a 47,600-cubic-yard stockpile. Why it matters

Ocean City exposes a reusable coastal-works control chain. A contract quantity describes scope; a dredge at the workfront describes readiness; pumped sand describes production; and an accepted protection asset depends on survey, transitions, access restoration and owner close-out. The City's 1.5-million-cubic-yard result and 47,600-cubic-yard stockpile belong to the completed 2022-23 cycle and cannot be used as 2026 output.

What remains open

Ocean City's contract is specific enough to judge on the finished beach rather than on dredge presence. The 2026 record should reconcile borrow-area authorization, sediment suitability, offshore production and daily pump-out quantities with the final grading survey. Acceptance turns on the 100-foot minimum berm at +8.0 feet NGVD, including the transitions at groins and project limits. Access restoration, any correction work and later post-storm condition belong to the same cycle; results from earlier nourishments should not be used to fill gaps in the 2026 ledger.
