Coastal resilience and waterfront protection.

A beachfill, rock revetment, breakwater and monitored nearshore placement each close on different evidence. This guide follows the quantities, surveys, inspections and handover records that show where coastal work has actually reached.

Start with the work type

Beach nourishment closes through placed volume and surveyed profile. Revetments need accepted toe, filter and armour geometry. Breakwaters add foundation, continuity and navigation interfaces.

Fix the measurement boundary

Write down the date, workfront and denominator beside every quantity. A shipment, design allowance, programme indicator and certified installed quantity are four different records.

Follow the last open gate

Once construction is visible, the useful question moves to survey, inspection, defects, access restoration, owner acceptance, maintenance responsibility and performance after exposure.

01 Finance and authority

Separate programme finance, additional credit, permits, heritage validation, environmental conditions, and works authority from field production.

02 Material route

Read quarry release, dredged sand, armourstone supply, shipping, transfer, pump-out, and landing records as logistics evidence, not accepted protection.

03 Installed geometry

Look for surveyed beach templates, revetment chainage, toe and filter acceptance, breakwater sections, wall tie-ins, drainage, and access restoration.

04 Handover and performance

Completion certificates, defects closure, maintenance responsibility, post-storm observations, and monitoring records decide whether protection is proved.

The sequence below is the shortest route from a public announcement to a defensible project status. Each example uses the evidence already held in the linked IMWO record.

Beach nourishment

Ocean City: contract quantity to accepted beach profile

The current contract sets more than 1.6 million cubic yards and USACE records the dredge mobilised. The ledger now needs daily placement, cumulative quantity, borrow-area control, surveyed berm width and elevation, access restoration and USACE acceptance.

Rock revetment

Ebeye: quarry release to island handover

Quarry grading, ocean carriage, deep-water transfer and landing are all part of delivery. The final construction record still turns on surveyed chainage and cross-sections, toe and filter inspection, tie-ins, drainage, defects closure and funded maintenance responsibility.

Dikes and breakwaters

Gorée: protect the scope behind each percentage

The published 82%, 85% and 75% figures use different dates or scope boundaries. Segment completion for the eastern and western works must be read alongside the school wall, mosque slope, UNESCO validation, promenade, landscaping and the proposed finance extension.

Preconstruction

West Point: permit secured, works evidence still ahead

Finance, an approved ESIA and the March 2026 environmental permit establish a serious project. The next commercial record is the works solicitation or award, followed by notice to proceed, quarry approvals, mobilisation and a baseline shoreline survey.

Research placement

St. Joseph: field activity before performance findings

The 83,000-cubic-yard campaign and perpendicular nearshore placement establish the 2026 field test. Bathymetry, turbidity, sediment movement and shoreline response will decide what the method achieved and whether it supports wider use.

A unit only becomes useful when its boundary is clear

Coastal reporting often fails because a correct number is given the wrong meaning. These four checks prevent the most common double counts.

t Tonnes

Ebeye's roughly 65,000-tonne intended armour use and approximately 80,000-tonne supplier record describe different parts of the chain. Reconcile both with certified installed quantities.

yd3 Cubic yards

Ocean City's current 1.6-million-cubic-yard contract is separate from the completed 2022-23 cycle. Keep contract, produced, placed and accepted volumes in separate columns.

km Linear extent

Ebeye's 1.81 kilometres of new seawall sits inside a 2.1-kilometre programme indicator that includes 300 metres of existing protection. State what is new before comparing lengths.

% Progress

Every percentage needs an as-of date, denominator and excluded scope. Gorée shows how protection works, landscaping and overall programme progress can produce valid but different figures.
