New Zealand backs a regional-port dredging barge with NZD 8 million

New Zealand has committed NZD 8 million to a crane dredger hopper barge for smaller regional ports. Johnson Bros will cover the rest of the NZD 12.9 million cost, and the government expects the vessel to enter service in late 2027.

Government funding covers most of the vessel cost

The 10 March New Zealand Government release confirms the NZD 8 million public contribution, NZD 12.9 million total cost, Johnson Bros co-funding, nationwide purpose and late-2027 target. The 12 March fund summary says the capability will be built in Northland but does not identify a yard. A Whanganui Chronicle interview supplies reported working particulars, including 38 m length, tug-towed operation, bottom dumping, shore discharge and about 390 m3 per hour. As at 23 July 2026, government and Johnson Bros material does not disclose a designer, shipyard, executed build contract or first deployment.

The plan targets a small-port maintenance gap

Smaller ports may need dredging after storms or at short notice but often lack enough regular work to support their own large dredger. A shared barge could give them a lower-cost option that can move around the country instead of relying on a large imported vessel or a permanent local fleet.

The funding, co-funder and intended role are confirmed. The build is not. The designer, contracted shipyard, executed vessel contract, hopper volume and first port assignment have not been disclosed. Johnson Bros has described a 38 m tug-towed arrangement and a production target, but a technical data sheet has not been released.
