Genoa's New Breakwater passed one kilometre and 24 installed caissons in June 2026. Those milestones cannot be extrapolated into completion: seabed treatment, rock foundation, caisson continuity, filling, armour and superstructure, dredging, old-breakwater interfaces, hydrography and formal navigation opening remain unfinished or unverified.

Published scope and current milestone

Webuild's 14 June 2026 update confirms the 24th caisson and its 40-by-25-by-18.70-metre dimensions. The 9 June update confirms more than one kilometre of breakwater and continuing seabed consolidation. Earlier 2026 and December 2025 records identify active superstructure, dredging, armour-block, vessel-fleet, gravel-column, and monitoring work fronts. The current project page places the eastern-entrance objective in 2027 and the 500-metre Sampierdarena channel in 2030. None of those sources states that the Phase 1 navigation opening has been accepted.

Port delivery and operating implications

The project is being built in water as deep as 50 metres beside an operating Mediterranean gateway. Contractors and suppliers need to see where marine production is repeatable; port users need to know when geometry becomes navigable; and owners need to preserve the distinction between installed concrete, accepted foundation behaviour, completed protection, published depth, and an operational entrance.

Handover, readiness and service evidence

A rising caisson count is visible progress, but it is not the operating measure for Genoa's new entrance. Each footprint still depends on accepted gravel columns and rock placement; the caissons must then be joined, filled, armoured and carried through the superstructure. Dredging and hydrographic confirmation have to establish the intended water space before traffic can shift to the eastern entrance. The later 500-metre Sampierdarena channel belongs to Phase 2 and should remain outside the Phase 1 completion claim.
