Geraldton awarded its breakwater before the wider marine works
Mid West Ports has awarded MGN Civil the surge-protection breakwater at Geraldton. The award sits ahead of the separately described dredging, reclamation, berth and tug-harbour works in the approved Port Maximisation Project.
Published scope and current milestone
The owner and Western Australian Government releases both confirm MGN Civil's breakwater award and a start later in 2026, but neither gives a contract value, notice to proceed or mobilisation evidence. Ministerial Statement 1272 and EPA Report 1792 set the approved 258,000 m3 dredging limit and conditions. The environmental assessment supplies the berth, tug-harbour, piling, sequence and material-reuse detail. None of those approval documents names contractors for the wider marine works. Landside Lease 11 activity is not treated as marine mobilisation.
Dredging quantity and delivery implications
The breakwater is intended to reduce the long-period surge that disrupts port operations, create sheltered tug mooring and partly contain the plume from later dredging. Its geometry and construction sequence affect dredger access, reclamation capacity, Berth 1 replacement, Berth 6 extension and the future Berths 8 and 9 layout.

Survey, placement and acceptance evidence
Only the breakwater award is public. The AUD 350 million figure belongs to the whole Port Maximisation programme, not to MGN Civil's contract. Ministerial Statement 1272 allows up to 258,000 m3 of dredging and the wider berth and tug-harbour development, but approval is not an award or a start notice. No notice to proceed or mobilisation is public for the breakwater, and no owner award names contractors for the dredging or berth packages.
