Dredging
Ocean City planned 15,000 cubic yards for the Assateague bypass
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District; 23 November 2025 file image
USACE's May 2026 plan paired two Ocean City Inlet shoaling areas with one material route: approximately 15,000 cubic yards were assigned to MURDEN for authorized placement south of the inlet, offshore Assateague Island.
What changed
The 8 May 2026 Baltimore District release controls the planned 15,000 cubic yards, two excavation areas, MURDEN assignment, May window and authorized Assateague route. Its MURDEN photograph is dated 23 November 2025 and is used here only as exact-site plant context. The district programme page controls channel authorization, chronic shoaling, funding constraints, bypass relationship and the boundary around the still-proposed long-term realignment. The May release's nearly 13,000-cubic-yard figure is a result from November 2025, not output from the May 2026 cycle.
Why it matters
The dredging and the destination are one operating decision. Removing a shoal can restore access for the next navigation window, while the bypass route moves compatible sediment toward the downdrift island system. Neither benefit is proven by the planned quantity alone.
Decision read
What remains open
USACE published the plant, target quantity, excavation areas and placement route together, making this small maintenance cycle unusually specific. May production, route-specific placement, post-dredge survey and completion are not reported. The nearly 13,000 cubic yards reported for November 2025 belongs to the preceding cycle. The district's longer channel-realignment concept also stays on a separate line until a funded decision or award appears.
Next watchpoints
- Dated field evidence that MURDEN started the May 2026 cycle
- Measured excavation from Priority Area 1 and the secondary oceanside area
- Verified split-hull placement offshore Assateague Island
- Post-dredge survey against the 10-foot authorized channel and allowable overdepth
- USACE completion and acceptance of the May cycle
- Any final and funded decision on the separate long-term navigation proposal
