The second 73,500-tonne Fehmarnbelt element was installed and connected in June, taking the owner-reported installed system beyond 500 metres. That repeat is meaningful marine evidence, but 87 elements, special-element learning, protective works, systems, German land interfaces, and separate road-first and rail-later opening programmes still control delivery.

What changed

Femern's 29 June update confirms the second element, the five-tug tow, wire-guided placement, connection to the first element, more than 500 metres installed, and subsequent gravel and stone protection. The 4 and 7 May records define the first tow, 14-hour immersion, and connection to the Danish portal. The 17 May owner statement establishes road-first and rail-later opening, while the January update and April factsheet preserve the schedule and physical-scope boundaries. These sources do not establish mature series productivity, a replacement opening date, or final project cost.

Why it matters

The project couples one of the world's largest serial precast operations to precision marine placement and a cross-border road-rail commissioning chain. Owners evaluating immersed crossings need evidence about repeat cadence and joint acceptance; contractors need clear civil-to-systems boundaries; and users need a schedule that distinguishes an installed element, a protected and connected tunnel reach, a road opening, and a later railway opening.

What remains open

The move into series immersion shows that Fehmarnbelt has passed the first-unit learning stage, but every element still needs accepted bedding, alignment, joint closure, backfill and protection. Civil continuity through the portals and special elements must then be followed by power, ventilation, fire, traffic and railway-system testing. Road and rail are now on different delivery paths: a dated road opening would not by itself establish railway service or full fixed-link completion.
