Ports & Dredging
Kingston Pier appoints revetment contractor while dredging stays in tender
Norfolk Island Tourism; site context, not 2026 works progress
Land and Marine Ocean Engineering has the revetment package. A separate tender covers about 4,700 m3 of channel dredging, pier repairs, strengthening and a navigation aid, with award and mobilisation still to be confirmed.
What changed
The 14 May 2026 government release names Land and Marine Ocean Engineering only for the rock revetment and says the separate dredging and pier-repair request for tender has been released. The project page defines approximately 4,700 cubic metres of dredging, a channel depth near 3.2 metres below mean sea level, quarry reuse, archaeology, pier works and environmental monitoring. Its timing statements are programme expectations rather than evidence of award, mobilisation or accepted output.
Why it matters
The sequence is driven by a physical interface, not administrative convenience. The western revetment is meant to absorb changed wave action from the deeper channel, so its completion and accepted condition affect when dredging can start. The second contractor must then work around an operating island pier, heritage-sensitive seabed, marine-park water-quality controls and a defined quarry route for recovered material.
Decision read
What remains open
The tender outcome needs to settle more than plant and price. It should identify responsibility for pre-dredge survey, archaeological screening, real-time water-quality triggers, pier access, material haulage, post-dredge acceptance and navigation-aid commissioning. The May programme sets a planning window, but only an award, notice to proceed and visible mobilisation can move the dredging record into delivery.
