Port Hedland awards A$50 million Zone 5 bypass channel dredging

Pilbara Ports has awarded Jan De Nul Australia the Zone 5 Bypass Channel, but the A$50 million contract is only one step in a longer resilience chain. The public record defines a -11.5 m Chart Datum route, up to 800,000 cubic metres, SG7C offshore placement and a planned September start; it also shows federal sea-dumping application SD2026-4091 as received, not granted in the reviewed register.
Published scope and current milestone
The project history combines owner, state, federal, harbourmaster and contractor records. The October 2021 proposal fixes the first public channel and material envelope. Pilbara Ports' September 2025 marine notice documents the offshore geotechnical campaign. The February 2026 salvage plan connects future bypass activation to incident command and Harbour Master approval. The April environmental review defines dredging and monitoring controls, while the federal register records SD2026-4091 as an application for a two-year, 800,000-cubic-metre permission. EPA WA's 11 May decision closed the Part IV assessment path, and the 22 June owner release establishes the A$50 million Jan De Nul award and September start target. Permit grant, mobilisation, completion, hydrographic acceptance and bypass operation remain undocumented.
Contract packaging and mobilisation implications
Port Hedland moves very large bulk carriers through one 42-kilometre channel in tidal convoys. The bypass is meant to preserve reduced-capacity transit after a Zone 5 grounding. That requires permitted material placement, accepted geometry and aids, hydrographic confirmation, Harbour Master approval, salvage-command handoff and a traffic sequence that works in practice.
Evidence conclusion
Award, mobilisation and acceptance evidence
Federal disposal permission is the next hard dependency. Contractor mobilisation, controlled dredging and SG7C placement must then produce accepted geometry and aids before the Harbour Master can release the route. The 2021 five-week construction assumption is not a current contractual duration, and 800,000 cubic metres is the maximum environmental envelope. EPA WA's Part IV decision does not replace federal sea-dumping permission or nautical acceptance.
