Port Hedland Zone 5 Bypass Channel

Port Hedland's Zone 5 Bypass Channel has moved from a 2021 risk-mitigation design through offshore geotechnical work, environmental and continuity planning, and a June 2026 A$50 million award to Jan De Nul Australia. The public design allows up to 800,000 cubic metres to create a -11.5 m Chart Datum route and place material at SG7C, but permit approval, mobilisation, accepted geometry and demonstrated reduced-capacity transit remain open.

Execution window
The owner expects dredging to start in September 2026. The environmental envelope defines a 432-hectare navigation-channel area including a 50-metre buffer, a -11.5 m Chart Datum design depth plus up to 1.0 metre of over-dredge, and up to 800,000 cubic metres across a 162-hectare disturbance footprint. A TSHD is anticipated, with a CSD possible for consolidated spots, and material is proposed for the 282-hectare SG7C sub-area of Spoil Ground 7 in Commonwealth waters. Future maintenance would require incorporation into the port's maintenance sea-dumping permit.
Marine interfaces
The bypass sits beside a steep-edged reach of Port Hedland's single 42-kilometre channel, where very large bulk carriers move in tidal convoys. Its value depends on work-vessel separation, VTS controls, passing lanes and refuge areas, dredging plume and fauna controls, disposal-site release, aids and hydrography, Harbour Master procedures, salvage-command handoff and the ability to move controlled traffic at reduced capacity when Zone 5 is obstructed.
Commercial evidence boundary
The award is a credible capital-dredging commitment and future fleet-demand signal, but the public maximum volume is an environmental envelope rather than a bill quantity. The package's economic value is continuity rather than added headline capacity: it becomes real only after regulatory closure, final geometry, nautical acceptance and an approved activation procedure support vessel transit around a blocked main channel.
