Port Hedland's Zone 5 Bypass Channel has moved from a 2021 risk-mitigation design through offshore geotechnical work, environmental and continuity planning, and a June 2026 A$50 million award to Jan De Nul Australia. The public design allows up to 800,000 cubic metres to create a -11.5 m Chart Datum route and place material at SG7C, but permit approval, mobilisation, accepted geometry and demonstrated reduced-capacity transit remain open.

The 7 April environmental review carries those controls into the referral record, and DCCEEW lists sea-dumping application SD2026-4091 as received on 8 April for a two-year permit and up to 800,000 cubic metres; the reviewed federal page does not list it among permits granted or refused. EPA WA decided on 11 May not to assess the proposal under Part IV. Pilbara Ports and the Western Australian Government then announced the A$50 million Jan De Nul award on 22 June and a planned September start. Permit grant, mobilisation, excavation, as-built geometry, nautical acceptance and demonstrated bypass operation remain undocumented.
