Algarve seawater desalination intake and outfall system
Águas do Algarve has started the design-build-operate contract for mainland Portugal's first seawater desalination plant. The system combines two intake towers about 2 km offshore, two large-diameter intake pipelines, a 2.13 km brine outfall, a coastal pumping station and a 4.8 km raw-water main to a 16 million m3/year first-stage plant.

The 8 July first-brick event is a real site milestone but is described by the owner as symbolic. Government and owner releases do not establish offshore mobilisation, installed towers or pipelines, completed diffuser works, first water, provisional acceptance or environmental performance. APA's earlier conditional decision and study record define the seabed-preparation, dredging, sediment and brine-monitoring boundary rather than construction progress.
