Congo Terminal East Mole expansion

Aerial view of Congo Terminal's East Mole quay under construction at Pointe-Noire with completed deck sections and active land works

Congo Terminal; exact East Mole construction progress published 6 July 2026

Congo Terminal is extending its existing Pointe-Noire container concession with a separate 750-metre East Mole quay, a deepened berth line and an electrically operated terminal platform. CRBC is the confirmed construction contractor and Ingerop is the named engineering consultant for dredging, navigation, wave and reclamation studies. By July 2026 the owner reported 400 metres of quay delivered, all 558 steel piles driven and active dredging adapted to bituminous sands.

Project anatomy

Contract scope and delivery roles

Client / authority
Congo Terminal SA, the Pointe-Noire container-terminal concession company jointly held by Africa Global Logistics, APM Terminals and SOCOTRANS; the concession was extended to the end of 2050
Delivery parties
China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) - contractor for the new East Mole quay and associated marine construction, including the active dredging and pile programme described by the owner, Ingerop - engineering consultant for the 750-metre extension, necessary dredging, navigation study, wave-agitation study and northern embankments, Credit du Congo and Attijariwafa Bank - arrangers of the EUR 230 million financing; not construction contractors, Ecobank, BCI, BSCA and BGFIBank Congo - participating Congolese lenders; not construction contractors, The reviewed owner and contractor records do not allocate the five STS cranes, 15 eRTGs, 30 electric terminal tractors, dredging plant or downstream civil packages to named suppliers or subcontractors
Contract route
Congo Terminal launched early earthworks in March 2024 and awarded the new-quay construction contract to CRBC in November 2024 after a tender. A EUR 230 million local-bank financing was arranged in March 2025 within a broader EUR 361 million works programme. The concession company is delivering the expansion inside its existing terminal concession rather than through the separate Noatum Ports concession.
Execution window
Early earthworks started in March 2024. CRBC launched its cutter-suction dredger by August 2025. The owner reported all 558 piles driven on 26 June 2026 and 400 metres of quay complete on 6 July 2026. The full 750-metre quay and associated terminal platform are targeted for 2027.
Works package
Construct a 750-metre quay with approximately 17 metres of water depth, two berths for ships up to 400 metres and 24,000 TEU, and roughly 26 to 28 hectares of terminal area. Integrate five electric STS cranes, 15 electric RTGs, 30 electric terminal tractors, 1,680 reefer points, utilities and buildings to increase capacity toward 2.5 million TEU. Official area figures vary by release and remain subject to final as-built confirmation.
Marine interfaces
The pile-supported quay, dredged berth pocket, land formation, rock protection, crane foundations, power network and terminal equipment must be released in a coordinated sequence. The 2026 dredging method was modified for bituminous sands, making hydrographic acceptance, material handling and quay-front stability key interfaces before the electric equipment can enter service.
Commercial evidence boundary
Construction evidence is unusually current, but the public contract ledger remains incomplete below CRBC and Ingerop. The owner has published financing, pile and quay milestones. It has not published the dredger owner, equipment suppliers, downstream subcontract values, surveyed berth acceptance, final platform area or a complete commissioning schedule.

Material developments

Dated events that changed scope, counterparties, delivery, commissioning or operating status.

Open this project in the Change Log

The owner positioned the project as an all-electric terminal platform

Congo Terminal identified five electric STS cranes, 15 eRTGs and 30 electric tractors for a 2.5 million TEU configuration without naming the equipment suppliers or confirming commissioning.

Source

Four hundred metres of quay were reported complete

The owner placed the live works beyond pile mobilisation but short of the full 750-metre quay and terminal handover.

Source

Pile driving closed at 558 steel piles

Completion of the marine foundation programme removed a major structural gate while deck, dredging and terminal integration continued.

Source

A EUR 230 million local-bank financing was completed

The financing supported a EUR 361 million works programme and strengthened delivery visibility beyond the initial CRBC award.
